E3 2010
The Conferences
Nintendo
Nintendo stole the show, the Nintendo conference was game after game a very welcomed change from Nintendo of E3’s past. With the announcement of the 3DS Nintendo locked in as king of E3 2010, they demonstrated its graphical power well with games like Ocarina of Time, MGS 3, and Kid Icarus, while leaving the obvious games like Mario Kart for the show floor.
Microsoft
Microsoft’s conference was the most confusing of the bunch, with the appearance of Kinect mostly spoiled by leaks from the taped Cirque du Solei MTV event Microsoft’s decision to show so much Kinect at their Conference left many core gamers confused and upset. That said while Kinect hasn’t shown its full potential I believe with games like Harmonix’s Dance Central and Children of Eden we could see Kinect sell very well at a sub one hundred price point. The rest of the conference was full of major core titles like Gears of War 3, Halo: Reach, MGS: Rising, and a new Microsoft published Crytek game named Kingdom. The conference wrapped up with the leaked redesigned 360 which is quieter, smaller, uses less power, and has built in WiFi. Fives years later it appears that Microsoft was able to combine the GPU and CPU on to one die hopefully eliminating the feared red ring of death.
Sony
Sony’s conference was perhaps the most traditional of the bunch, they showed a solid amount of core titles like Little Big Planet 2, a new Twisted Metal game, and finally set a release date for Gran Turismo 5. Sony continued to push 3D heavily, which in my opinion is an easy way to push Bravia televisions. Sony also showed off Move which is really just a high-fidelity wii mote and an EyeToy, personally I think Sony still doesn’t get why the Wii was successful.
